How to Blog 101

On the Google Zeitgeist What's Hot top 10, number 8 is 'how to blog'.

Figured we could help the masses with a little beginner's course on just that.

Using Google Blogger
1. Go to http://www.blogger.com/start
2. Follow the 1-2-3 easy steps: create an account, name your blog, choose a template
3. Once the blog is created, you can add/edit/delete topics until your fingers cramp.
4. Accessing the blog again is as simple as going to Google's homepage. At the top right corner it will say 'Sign In' or 'My Account' if you are still logged in.
5. Click on 'My Account' and it will show you all the Google services you are enrolled in. Then click on the Blogger link and it will take you to the Google Blogger dashboard.

FAQ's On BlackMagic Design Intensity

From http://www.avalive.biz/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2

Product can be purchased here:

http://www.avalive.biz/Black-Magic-Design-Blackmagic-Design/BHDINT/18451/productDetail.php

Hey all,
There have been a few questions that seem to be repeating themselves several
times about the HDMI capabilities of the new Intensity and Decklink HD
Studio cards. To help clear up some confusions I'd like to just clarify two
of the most common questions.

Q. Can I copy my "Hollywood Movies" -like HD DVD, Blu-Ray, or even DVDs- by
capturing via HDMI.

A. NO! We do not allow you to capture copy protected footage!
http://www.blackmagic-design.com/support/detail.asp?techID=173

HDMI uses a copy protection form known as HDCP. Many new devices that are
built with HDCP are generally 'HDCP Compliant' which means they support this
copy protection format.

Our products RESPECT HDCP, which means they will not allow you to capture
protected footage.

So, for example, a customer might call saying he can't capture HDMI from his
DVD player. Generally this will be because they are trying to capture from
a protected 'hollywood' movie. However if they were to put a home made DVD
in the device they would indeed be able to capture the video via HDMI.

Q. Can I convert DVI to HDMI with a converter (similar to the bender that
comes with HDLink/Multibridge Extreme) and capture that HDMI video signal
with these new cards?

A. UNLIKELY- as Intensity cards are looking for YUV video and supported
television frame rates and resolution.

This request generally comes from folks looking to take the DVI output of
their computer and convert it to HDMI to be captured as video. The problem
here is that while DVI and YUV share a similar pin out structure they are
not the same entirely, particularly in color space. DVI coming out of the
computer is going to be RGB 8 bit, and HDMI can actually be YUV or RGB. The
'bender' is going to convert the DVI RGB signal to HDMI RGB and technically
so long as you have a video frame rate and resolution (like you would with a
HDLink) you can feed that to most HDMI monitors. However the Intensity
cards can only take YUV video signals and will not be able to take in the
RGB signals (video frame rate and resolution correct or otherwise).

As always if you have any questions about these notes please feel free to
reach out to me at any time.

Thanks

Dan

Get your camera phones ready

Yahoo partners up with Reuters to form 'You Witness', a photo submission program where you can submit photos of daily events and news.

"Yahoo plans to run selected images contributed by users as part of topical packages on Yahoo News, which currently offers news from dozens of professional news organizations including Associated Press, CNN and Reuters. "

So, if you happen to be at the right place at the right time, take a pic and send it in. It may wind up on the front page of Yahoo.

Dont' get Microsoft Vista just yet

Just read an article on Business Standard that talks about all the great features of Microsoft's new OS, Vista.

However, although M$ claims this is their most secure OS ever, they still encourage users to run security software to protect their PCs. Problem is that companies like Symantec, Trend Micro and CA are still working on products that support Vista which should be out anytime between December and February.

So, you might want to wait awhile, at least until February.

New Smartphone by Samsung and Microsoft

The companies said the phone _ the Samsung Ultra Messaging i600 _ was the world's thinnest 3G smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard. It is also the first smartphone that supports Web applications like podcasts and RSS Feeder, which scans Web sites for updates, the companies said.

Full Smartphone article here

Cool! The article also mentions the phone has 2 cameras and can be used for 3G video calls. Nice, now I can look at the person I'm talking to on the phone while I'm driving. Oh wait....that's not good.

infoComm offers AV Certification programs

infoComm now offers three certification levels for you and your staff:

General Certification (CTS)
The CTS designation is for AV professionals who have demonstrated knowledge and comprehension of the science and technology used in communications including audio, video, display and systems. Technicians, engineers, designers, salespeople, customer service personnel, managers and executives are eligible for taking the general certification (individual) testing. InfoComm's general certification is recognized by the National Certification Commission.

Specialized Certification (CTS-D,CTS-I)
A CTS-D or CTS-I indicates at least two year's industry experience and a higher skill level than the CTS (general) designation. Although no specific courses are required for certification, InfoComm International offers courses through InfoComm Academy that can help candidates focus and refine their skills and knowledge. Testing for specialized certification is offered at various locations throughout the year.

Company Certification (CAVSP)
CAVSP is awarded to organizations who have demonstrated their commitment to professional excellence. Companies can achieve General, Silver or Gold CAVSP levels based on the proportion of their technical sales and customer service personnel who earn General or Specialized individual certification.

Apple to launch new iPhone early 2007

Here's a pic of it:

As you can see, the display area looks much like the Apple desktop with the nice glossy icons on the bottom.

Wireless Energy Transfer

Just read an article on The Christian Science Monitor that a new technology is being developed where energy is being transferred between two electronic devices via airwaves.

So, let's say you're walking down the street and your cell phone starts to die on you because your battery is low. Soon, you might be able to walk to your nearest recharging station and just stand there as your cell phone recharges.

Quoting from the article:
"His idea involves "electromagnetic resonances," in which energy jumps between two locations, as it does for very short distances inside an electric motor or transformer. "It's a very general phenomenon in nature," Soljacic says. "In quantum mechanics, it's called 'tunneling.' In electromagnetics, it's called 'evanescent coupling."
